My Thoughts On Rookie Mag Shutting Down

Rookie Magazine, an online magazine publication run by strong women writers for young girls is closing up shop…

Tavi Gevinson, the founder of Rookie and the inspiration for all girls young and old, as recently published on rookiemag.com her final Editor Letter of closing down Rookie. Jazmin, one of my longtime friends, message me the bad news. I remember us as young girls, reading and studying the first Rookie Yearbook publication. Mesmerized by nostalgia, The Virgin Suicides (one of my favorite books), fashion, sex, body talk, photography, literature, and what it means to be a girl. Jazmin was the person who exposed me to Rookie and I’ve been in love with it for years. One of my most prized possessions is my mother buying me the latest Rookie Yearbook signed by Tavi herself. Rookie is probably the main inspiration behind holliesongbird.com. It’s funny to say, but I planned to work with Rookie Magazine. After college, I was going to find some way to apply and work alongside these powerful female artists. Now that chance is gone.

I read an article on Forbes, and it talked about the rapid pace of these journals shutting down. It seems that the online space for women writers is shrinking into nothing, and this worries me. I know that my blog is more Lifestyle centered, but this makes me realize that I need to step up my game. I need to do something for young boys and girls. My friend said that I should publish one of my personal journals and tips I’ve written when I was young or start doing interviews, maybe changing things up a bit with how we talk to our audience. Not saying that Rookie didn’t do that, but I believe that as artists and consumers we should maintain the legacy of knowledge and creative thinking.

I know I’m only one person and I can only do so much. I can’t constantly post or brainstorm ideas all by myself, but so far I have been for most of the time. Maybe I’ll start up a staff, maybe I’ll create something bigger than holliesongbird.com. I’m not sure what my audience would be, but I do know that I want to inspire all young women someday.

Who knows.
